"The Woman in White" was first published in serial form in 1959-60, appearing in Charles Dickens' magazine "All the Year Round" (UK) and "Harper's Weekly (USA), and was first published in book form in 1860. It is considered to be among the first mysery novels and is widely regarded as on of the first in the genre of "sensation novels". It is also sometimes considered an early example of detective fiction (Wikipedia). The novel was extremely successful commercially, and has been issued in a great number of editions and copies.
